A Brief History of AMD
Founded in 1969 by Jerry Sanders and several former Fairchild Semiconductor employees, AMD initially focused on memory chip development before expanding into microprocessors. Throughout the 1990s, AMD gained recognition as Intel’s main competitor, producing x86-based CPUs that powered IBM-compatible PCs.
In 2006, AMD acquired ATI Technologies, a leading GPU manufacturer, marking a turning point in its product development. This acquisition led to the creation of Accelerated Processing Units (APUs), integrating both CPU and GPU capabilities. AMD’s Ryzen processors, launched in 2017, were a significant breakthrough, offering competitive performance and value in the CPU market. Today, AMD’s processors and GPUs power everything from gaming PCs to enterprise data centers.
